La battaglia di Eraclea, il primo confronto tra le forze armate della Repubblica Romana e un esercito ellenistico, ha luogo nella prima metà del III secolo a.C. in Lucania durante la spedizione occidentale di Pirro, re dell’Epiro. Spesso questo confronto militare è stato analizzato in maniera superficiale e sintetica nonostante le testimonianze ad esso riferibili concedano la possibilità di un’analisi più approfondita ed ampia a livello multidisciplinare. Partendo dall’osservazione strategico-tattica della battaglia si è quindi provveduto ad ampliare il campo di indagine verificando i possibili confronti di ambito militare romano ed ellenistico e approfondendo l’indagine iconografica in ambito numismatico, specialmente analizzando l’accezione celebrativa e simbolica delle emissioni prese in esame riconducibili alla battaglia . Lo scopo di questa analisi è di aggiornare lo “Status Quaestionis” su un evento bellico di grande rilevanza militare all’interno degli scontri tra Roma e il mondo ellenistico agli inizi del III sec. a.C.

Commonly known as “The battle of Heraclea” the first confrontation between the Roman Republican military forces and a Hellenistic army took place in southern Italy in the first half of the 3rd century BC during the expedition of Pyrrhus, king of Epirus . Such fight offers an interesting research field about warfare tactics and the evolution of the war machines employed at that time. Even so this subject has often been analyzed briefly and superficially, through a continuous overuse of consolidated data.
The primary sources about this struggle are very limited and thus our view of the event is partial and fragmentary.
Starting with the analysis of the many scattered references about the battle and nearby events, it appears that some episodes that had been previously assigned to other episodes of the war between Rome and Pyrrhus, can be linked to this specific struggle and thus provide new contributions to a complete view of it.
Furthermore, broadening the scope of the investigation and including other witnesses and material evidence could lead to a more complete comprehension of the episode. In this sense the comparative studies in iconography can tackle more effectively the informative lack of the literary sources.
Therefore we will try to complement the existing literature by assuming a multidisciplinary approach. Our line of research develops between literary sources and archaeological evidence with further contributions from the contemporary coinage.
By proposing a new approach we will integrate the teachings from a wider spectrum of disciplines in order to correctly update the status quaestionis about Hellenistic and Roman warfare in the 3rd century BC.

Gli scenari bellici di età classica sono una fonte a cui spesso attinge il moderno sistema di intrattenimento per i prodotti di grande diffusione mediatica. Recentemente lo sviluppo della battaglia di Canne è stato oggetto di due diverse interpretazioni provenienti da contesti culturali
differenti e riferibili all’ambito della grafica e dello storytelling audiovisivo. La raffigurazione narrativa dello scontro nel manga “Ad Astra – Scipione e Annibale” di Mihachi Kagano e lo
sviluppo del confronto militare noto come “La Battaglia dei Bastardi” all’interno dell’omonimo episodio della popolare serie televisiva “Il Trono di Spade” offrono la possibilità di un’analisi critica multidisciplinare. Le due opere sono infatti una rappresentazione di un evento storico e una
narrazione ispirata dallo stesso. Il presente studio confronta i dati provenienti dalle fonti storiche,  dalle testimonianze materiali e  include inoltre le visioni accademiche dell’evento, tra cui il recente
riesame del professor Brizzi dal titolo “Canne. La sconfitta che fece vincere Roma”. Viene pertanto stabilito un confronto dialogico tra gli studi moderni, le modalità di mediazione e la traduzione
artistica in merito ad uno scontro celebre nell'immaginario collettivo e noto al grande pubblico. Lo scopo è quindi quello di esporre una dettagliata analisi di ampio respiro su un evento bellico recentemente trasmesso tramite diversi canali di comunicazione, al di là di semplici analogie e associazioni suggestive.

L’analisi dei soggetti iconografici utilizzati da Pirro nelle sue emissioni monetarie in ambito siciliano consente di delineare un linguaggio propagandistico dinamico, in dialogo con il contesto politico-militare insulare. L’iconografia presente sugli stateri aurei pertinenti alla fase conclusiva della spedizione siciliana di Pirro, in particolare, offre la possibilità di approfondire l’esito conclusivo di questo percorso comunicativo estremamente variegato. Lo studio eseguito su questa
sintesi visuale ha consentito di individuare i plausibili nessi storici connessi con gli eventi storici concernenti la vittoria di Heraclea e la sua successiva celebrazione da parte dell’Epirota. Questa interpretazione è stata attentamente vagliata tramite il confronto con i contributi provenienti dalle fonti storiche, dall’ambito epigrafico ellenistico, dalle testimonianze numismatiche di matrice italiota e dalle testimonianze funerarie pertinenti l’ambito italico. L’esito di questa analisi
multidisciplinare induce a ritenere preponderante la volontà di Pirro di affermare la sue doti strategiche e tattiche evocando tramite un’iconografia monetale specifica ed esplicita il ricordo del
suo primo successo militare in occidente.

The reverse iconography of a Sicilian Pyrrhus’ gold issue can be linked with the exploitation of the propaganda concerning the Pyrrich victory at Heraclea as the symbols represented on this specific numismatic issue seem to indicate. This hypothesis has been verified by widening the scope of the investigation involving some other testimonies coming from the literary sources, the epigraphic field and comparisons with some representations coming from the italiote contemporary coinage. The choice of a theme that evokes Pyrrhus’ first military success in his western campaign can be explained with the great resonance of this event in the contemporary memory, that give the chance to the Epirote to reaffirm his  strategic and tactical qualities

The study of the iconographies concerning the celebration and the memory of past historical events is a subject that requires a wide spectrum of analysis. If we focus our attention on the roman republican warfare we can observe the celebrations concerning the victory of Lucius Aemilius Paullus against Perseus, king of Macedonia, during the 168 b.C. In particular we can observe two figurative evidence about this specific subject: the frieze of the monument of Lucius Aemilius Paullus in Delphi and the reverse of the coin issue minted by Lucius Aemilius Lepidus Paullus during the 62 b.C. The marble frieze from Delphi is generically linked to the decisive battle of Pidna whereas the iconography of the coin issue is related to the celebration of the triumph by Paullus in Rome after the victory against Perseus. The comparison between both these iconographies and the literary sources, which describe these historical events, shows us the use of a peculiar figurative language. So it is possible to analyze in detail these symbolic representations of history made for propaganda purposes
in two different chronological and spatial contexts.

Classical warfare is a subject that offers an interesting source of inspiration for the modern entertainment system. If we focus on the representations of a single specific battle, which is generally known by the great public , we can quote the battle of Thermopylae, described in the graphic novel of Frank Miller “300” and its homonymous film adaptation. Recently an episode of the last season of HBO’s fantasy series “Game of Thrones” was focused on a pitched battle called “Battle of the Bastards”. The tactical development of this military confrontation was inspired, as was stated by the screenwriters of the episode, by different historical battles and especially by the encirclement put in place by Hannibal Barca in the battle of Cannae, during the Second Punic War. Focusing about this specific tactical maneuver we have developed a multidisciplinary analysis including the recent academic essay “Canne, la sconfitta che fece vincere Roma”2 written by Professor G. Brizzi, the literary sources, the iconographies and the material evidences related to the military cultures involved in the battle. We have also compared the development of the battle between Hannibal and the Roman Republic and its modern reinterpretation. Our purpose was to create a case study by analyzing the interpretation of the classical warfare in the modern media.
